D (an 8th grader) was absent on Monday. Turns out he accidentally shot himself in the leg while he was out hunting on Friday night. He was pretty far out, with a sixth grader, and managed to walk back while the sixth grader ran ahead for help. He was pretty lucky, all things considered. He got back to town last night and was in school this morning. After the 8th Grade Banquet, he showed off the nice round hole in the back of his leg, and the surgery ... not-yet-scars. He chipped 'the bone', but didn't break anything. They left the bullet where it was, though news from an 8th grader is not the most clear, and I can't say why the doctors made that decision. He says six weeks in the brace (like the one I had when I broke my knee, only prettier) and then he can start building strength again. Three months and he's allowed to play ball. No hunting until fall. Really glad it looks like he's going to be just fine.

8th Grade Banquet was tonight. We made pizza dough, yesterday. Two of the five batches of dough did not rise. Oops. Not sure why, as the other three were perfect and we made them all at the same time with the same ingredients. I wish I knew which of the five they were, but the only one I knew the location of was the one I made. (And it was fine.) If I knew, I could at least say - "It's because V's version of kneeding was to pull the dough until it ripped and then squish it back together again" - but I think hers was one that came out okay (if lumpy). We bought some extra pizzas from the store, and I'm glad we did because we ended up needing to feed a bunch o' little kids we weren't expecting. The three BIG pizzas we made came out quite well, I must say.

The Banquet itself was a success. The parents seemed pleased. The kids were happy (though V insists that she was bored). The other teachers at least seemed to appreciate that it had happened and how well it went. The kids did an awesome job cooking, serving, and cleaning. At least, they did a great job cleaning until we ran out of hot water. I told them to set the rest aside and I would appologize to the cooks and take care of the rest in the morning. There wasn't that much left, so it's not horrible.

The 8th graders and I discussed the notion that they have 4 years in which to raise money for a possible senior trip. ("To Bethel?" one asked. "No, let's go to Anchorage," said another. I offered, "Or, how about Japan, or Hawaii, or Florida?" So, now they're thinking.) If we can get the pizza down, maybe they can start selling pizza to raise funds.

Enough about 8th Graders.
